BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- One day before heading to New Orleans to face conference rival Tulane (4-3, 2-2), the UAB football team practiced for two hours in shorts and helmets on Thursday. UAB (3-3, 2-0) will face the Green Wave on Saturday, October 19th, at 2:30 p.m. Head coach Watson Brown knows that Tulane's defense is strong.
"This is a team that forces a lot of fumbles and puts a lot of pressure on you, so we need to do a good job on offense of taking care of the ball," said Brown. "We've really worked hard on that this week. My two biggest concerns are taking care of the ball and protecting the quarterback. They lead our conference in sacks and turnover ratio, so we've got to protect the ball and the quarterback this week."
Tulane is coming off a victory over Cincinnati, 35-17. Junior quarterback J.P. Losman was 14-of-23 for 163 yards, threw for two scores and ran for another in the win. Junior runningback Mewelde Moore carried 25 times for 93 yards. The Green Wave's defense forced five more turnovers, giving the unit a nation-leading 26 on the season, just one less than they had all of 2001. True freshman cornerback Sean Lucas returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown. Senior defensive end Kenan Blackmon had 10 tackles, three tackles for loss and two of Tulane's six sacks on the day.
