ORLANDO, Fla. - The UAB men's golf team was ranked 19th in the Preseason Precept Coaches Poll as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) today.
During the fall, the Blazers played in five tournaments beginning with the prestigious Topy Cup in Fukushima, Japan. Junior Graeme McDowell captured individual honors in the event with a 10-under par 206 helping the Blazers to a second place finish. At the ULM/Fredmarx Invitational, the Blazers earned their second straight second place finish. From there, the Blazers finished tied for fifth at the Club Glove Intercollegiate and ninth at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. Rounding out the season in style, the Blazers took home the title at the Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate defeating Auburn by one stroke. McDowell garnered his second win of the season shooting a tournament record 12-under par 204.
The spring schedule will definitely be a challenging one for the Blazers. UAB will open the slate with the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. where they will compete against 2000-01 NCAA champion and host Florida. As the season moves on, the Blazers will play in the Conrad Rehling Alabama Invitational and the Atlanta Intercollegiate, where McDowell will look to reclaim his titles. The C-USA Championships will be held in Navarre, Fla. where the Blazers look to take the title away from defending champion Houston and move on to the NCAA Regional for the third consecutive year.
Georgia Tech topped the poll, followed by Wake Forest, Oklahoma State, Florida and Clemson.
