Men's Tennis Falls In Heartbreaker To Memphis

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The sixth seeded UAB men's tennis team fell 4-3 to seventh seeded Memphis in the consolation bracket at the Conference USA Championships hosted by Tulane.
UAB's Andre van der Merwe and Sanzaruz Zaman played impressively in doubles and defeated the tandem of Jack Hu and Michael Lahaie 8-4 at the No. 3 position, but the Tigers won at the No. 1 and No.2 doubles to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, van der Merwe, Alex Jung and Zaman all captured wins for the Blazers, but it proved to be one win shy of capturing the match. At the No. 1 spot, van der Merwe defeated Richard Magney 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Jung and Zaman went on to take their matches in straight sets. Jung defeated Ben Stapp 6-3, 6-1 while teammate Zaman defeated Alistair Todd 6-4, 7-6.
The Blazers will play the loser of the DePaul and Southern Miss match for seventh place at 8 a.m. Sunday morning.
