The UAB men's tennis team blanked the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Tuesday afternoon in duel-match action at the Lakeshore Tennis Facility in Birmingham, Ala. The Blazers captured the match in straight sets.
With the win, UAB improves to 5-7. JSU drops to 1-9.
The Blazers started the match strong, sweeping the doubles matches to capture the doubles point. At no. 1 singles, UAB's Tom Dalby and Alex Jung defeated Rian Greaves and Stuart Marcus 8-2.
In singles action, all six spots won in straight sets. At no. 1 singles, UAB's Andre van der Merwe defeated the Gamecock's Will Wright 6-2, 6-1, while Blazer Dalby defeated Greaves 6-3, 6-3 at the no. 2 spot. At no. 3 singles, Jung defeated Ruben Esparragoza 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Sanzaruz Zaman defeated his Gamecock opponent, Marcus 7-5, 6-0 at the no. 4 spot while sophomore Rusty Walker defeated Gamecock, Matt Wilson 6-1, 6-0 at the no. 5 spot. At no. 6 singles, freshman Niklas Lindstrom defeated Larry Lombardo 6-1, 6-3.
The Blazers will take a little over three weeks off before they strike up again against Miami on April 7 in Mobile, Ala. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
