Lady Blazers Fall at Memphis, 82-71

Princess Swilley scored 24 points and Tiffany Adkins added 22 as Memphis defeated UAB 82-71 in Conference USA play, Sunday afternoon at Memphis' Elma Roan Fieldhouse.
The loss was the second in a row after five straight wins and dropped UAB to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in C-USA. Memphis is 9-6 and 2-2 in the league. Both teams are 2-0 at home and 0-2 on the road in league play. The loss for the Lady Blazers comes just two weeks after beating Memphis 78-51 in Birmingham.
Swilley was 11-of-12 from the field as the Lady Tigers shot 64 percent from the field. UAB committed 23 turnovers and was outrebounded 27-23.
Memphis led most of the way, taking a 39-34 halftime lead. Adkins scored 18 of her points in the first half. UAB rallied to take a 64-63 lead on a basket by Deanna Jackson with 7:26 remaining in the game. It was a run of six straight points for Jackson who finished the game with 20 points.
That was UAB's only lead of the second half. Shannon Hamp scored on a basket with 7:00 left to put Memphis back in front. Hamp followed it up with a pair of free throws to put the Lady Tigers up 67-63. Swilley hit two straight baskets and Memphis was up by seven and had the game in control.
Hamp scored 10 points, all in the second half, and Swilley scored 16 of her points in the second period.
Mia Thrash added 18 points for UAB. Michelle Smith had her best outing since coming back from a leg injury four games ago. She scored 13 points.
Jackson finished the game hitting 7-of-15 from the field, but pulled down a season low six rebounds. Thrash was just 5-of-14 from the field, but hit 8-of-9 free throws. The Lady Blazers however, shot just 65 percent at the line, making 21-of-32.
UAB returns home to Bartow Arena, Friday night at 7 p.m. against Southern Miss. It is "Pack the House Night."
