UAB's Inside Game Dominates Jacksonville State 84-57

Jacksonville, Ala. - UAB shot 61.5 percent from the field allowed Jacksonville State just two points in the first 11 minutes of the game in taking an 84-57 win Tuesday night in Jacksonville, Ala.
Deanna Jackson led the Lady Blazers with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman forward Natasha Thomas came off the bench to add 17 points as UAB scored 48 points in the paing to just eight for the Gamecocks.
Jacksonville State scored the first two points of the game on a basket by Laura Baswell. After that UAB scored 18 straight points, taking an 18-2 lead before Amy Gallagher hit a free throw with 9:37 left in the first half to make the score 18-4. That was as close as Jacksonville State got the rest of the game.
UAB led 41-23 at the half after shooting 65 percent from the field and holding JSU to just 22 percent shooting (6-of-27).
Jacksonville State scored the first basket of the second half to cut the score to 41-25. However UAB pulled away and built as much as a 30-point lead at 68-38. The Lady Blazers shot 58 percent from the field in the second half. JSU shot a respectable 46 percent.
The three-point shot kept this game from being an even bigger runaway. Jacksonville State made 10-of-22 from behind the arc. Kelly Nye scored 15 points, making 4-of-9 long range shots. Gallagher added 14 points and Amanda Tyus scored 10 points.
In addition to her scoring and rebounding Jackson dished out five assists, blocked two shots and recorded two steals. It was her eighth double-double in nine games this season.
Thomas made 7-of-9 shots from the field, including 1-of-2 from three-point range. She also pulled down eight rebounds. Shaquetta Rhodes, the third member of UAB's front line scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds.
The three combined for 51 points and 27 rebounds and shot 62.5 percent from the field. They came into the game averaging 46 points, 25 rebounds and shooting 55 percent.
The Lady Blazers outrebounded JSU 42-23.
UAB hosts the Lady Blazer Invitational, Saturday and Sunday. The Lady Blazers play Florida A&M at 2 p.m. Saturday. Troy State plays Mississippi Valley State at 4 p.m. The consolation game is at 2 p.m. Sunday with the championship game at 4 p.m.
