BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team (15-20, 5-8) dropped game one against Wichita State (18-17-1, 6-6-1) on Friday 7-3.
A home run by Wichita State started the game in the first inning, and that was a good sign of things to come, as the bats were hot. Wichita State hit the ball 13 times in route to the win over the Blazers. The Shockers led 2-0 after the first inning.
Wichita State scored another three runs in the third inning, and Taylor Sedlacek hit her second homer of the day. Another home run happened right after Sedlacek's at bat to make the score 5-0.
UAB had just two base runners through three innings, which were both hit by pitches. Lindsey Smith got the first hit of the day for UAB when she doubled to left center. AJ Kramer then reached on a fielder's choice and scored the first run of the day. Another fielder's choice would score one more run for UAB, this time by Alyssa Aguilar. Wichita State led 6-2 after four.
Britt Bourgoyne made her eighth start of the season today and started the Blazers off in the seventh with a single. Bella Wiggins hit a single up the middle to continue the rally and accomplish a hit in eight out of the last nine games. One more single by Dorsett kept the rally going and scored a run. Wiggins was out at home on the next play shortstop to catcher. The Shockers retired the next two batters to win 7-3.
Next up, UAB will host a double header tomorrow starting at 1:00 p.m. against Wichita State.
