BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball announced the addition of Montevallo sophomore transfer guard Cali Smallwood on Tuesday.
"Cali is a prolific 3-point shooter, has an extremely high basketball IQ and is a coach's kid," head coach Randy Norton said. "She is a dynamic scorer and a threat from anywhere on the court. Cali has a winning mentality, strong work ethic, and high character which makes her a perfect fit for our program. She is an amazing young lady and will represent our program in the classroom, on the court and in the community."
The Blountsville, Alabama native led the Falcons in the 2023-24 season with 12.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in her freshman season. Smallwood also led the team with 112 field goals made, while shooing 39.9 percent from the field and with 64 (.352) 3-pointers.
Smallwood ranked fourth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (.352) and 3-point field goals per game (2.5). She also ranked sixth in the league in scoring and 10th in rebounding.
The 5-9 guard registered a season-high 19 points twice during the season, with a season-best 14 rebounds in a double-double effort against Christian Brothers. She tallied 20 double figure scoring games and four double-doubles throughout the season. Smallwood nailed the game-winner with 1.3 seconds remaining to claim the win over West Georgia.
Smallwood was a four-time GSC Freshman of the Week and earned GSC Freshman of the Year for her accolades during the season.
Prior to her beginning her collegiate career, Smallwood attended Susan Moore High School, where she amassed 1,311 career points (19.2 per game) and registered 402 career rebounds. In 2022, she was named Area MVP after a state runner up season and a First Team All-State selection. Smallwood was named All-Area four consecutive season with four-straight area titles and was also named as one of just three finalists for the Alabama 3A Player of the Year.
