BIRMINGHAM – Entering Opening Day week, here is a look into who you could see taking the mound for the UAB Blazers this season.
Returners Brooks Walton, Carson Myers, Leo Harris, Jonah Smith and Tyler O'Clair are joined by newcomers Colin Daniel, Christian Clack, Ben Abernathy and Blayze Berry to name a few.
"We still have a lot of competition among our staff as we head into the season," said head coach Casey Dunn. "Brooks Walton returns as the anchor of our staff."
Walton, a senior from Gainesville, Fla., appeared and started on the mound 14 times last season for the Blazers. He led the team with the most wins (6) and threw a 7-inning complete game versus Alabama A&M on March 6, 2022.
Left hander, Carson Knight, could be the left-handed option in the weekend rotation for UAB. Another option in the rotation could be freshman Colin Daniel. "[Colin Daniel] has had as good of a fall than anyone on our staff, and I could easily see him emerge as the year progresses," stated Coach Dunn.
UAB welcomes three transfers – Christian Clack, Ben Abernathy and Blayze Berry – all should spend plenty of time on the mound according to Coach Dunn.
"We really need our older guys to provide some experience in front of our newer and younger arms."
Some of the experienced guys include Leo Harris, Jonah Smith and Tyler O'Clair who collectively pitched 118 innings on the mound last season.

The Blazers start the 2023 season in Mobile, Ala. at the Jaguar Classic hosted by South Alabama on Feb. 17 against Eastern Kentucky at 12 P.M.
