RECAPPING 2022-23
The Blazers will be back in action after finishing the 2022-23 season with a program-record 29 wins and an appearance in the NIT Championship game for the first time in school history. Last season marked the final season for the Blazers in Conference USA and UAB is set to make its American Conference basketball debut later this season.
KEY RETURNERS
UAB returns four scholarship players from last year's roster in Eric Gaines, Javian Davis, Tony Toney and Efrem "Butta" Johnson. Gaines earned All-Conference USA Honorable Mention honors after averaging 11.5 points and 4.3 assists per game. He was recognized by The Almanac as the American Conference Preseason Player of the Year.
Davis' role is set to expand with the departure of Trey Jemison. Coming off the bench last year, he averaged 6.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest with a pair of double-doubles. His season was highlighted by a 19-point, 9-rebound effort at West Virginia and a 15-point performance against Florida Atlantic.
NINE NEWCOMERS
Andy Kennedy and his staff brought in nine new players in the offseason, including four JUCO players, four players from the transfer portal and one from the prep ranks. Three of the four JUCO transfers, Christian Coleman, Yaxel Lendeborg and Alejandro Vasquez each ranked among the top 10 JUCO players in the nation, according to JUCORecruiting.com.
