What to Know About UAB Football Heading Into Spring Practice

BIRMINGHAM – Returning to the field for the first time since its 31-28 victory over No. 13 BYU in the Independence Bowl, the UAB football team takes to the field on Tuesday for its first of 15 spring practices.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW:

The Blazers enter spring ball with seven returning starters on an offense that averaged 29.5 points per game and had 412 total yards against BYU. Key returners include UAB's starting backfield DeWayne McBride (1,371 yards) and Jermaine Brown Jr. (631 yards), wide receiver Trea Shropshire, who led the nation in yards per reception (27.9), and the majority of UAB's starting offensive line (Kadeem Telfort, Matthew Trehern, Will Rykard, Sidney Wells).

Defensively, UAB has nine starters or co-starters returning, highlighted by the entire secondary. Noah Wilder returns as the anchor at middle linebacker, while the biggest hole to fill will be on the defensive line as Kelle Sanders is the only returning starter on that unit.
Dylan Hopkins, who finished the 2021 season as the nation's eight most efficient passer, will not participate this spring after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery on his non-throwing shoulder. Bryson Lucero is entering his fourth year in the program and is joined by returners Harrison Barker and Dylan Mehrotra. New additions to the quarterback room who will compete this spring include Baylor transfer Jacob Zeno and junior college transfer Damon Stewart.
Number changes: Blazer nation will be seeing many players in new numbers this season. Notable changes include T.J. Jones (#3), Mac McWilliams (#5), Xavier Lanier (#8), Kyle Harrell (#9), Nikia Eason Jr. (#10), Terrell McDonald (#10), Damien Miller (#11), Isaiah Forte (#44), and Maleak Bryant (#80).
