BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field team opened up the UAB Spring Invite on Friday at the UAB track and field complex. The meet marks the first-ever outdoor track event in program history.
"Completing our outdoor track project is something I'm most proud of," director of athletics Mark Ingram said. "We've had a track program for 36 years, but until last year, never had an actual oval track. This is the first time having a track in program history. This represents our commitment to being great and winning championships in everything we do."
The meet began with the javelin. In the event, freshman Birthe Franck-Petersen set a mark of 38.74-meters to place fifth overall. The distance moves her into eighth in UAB outdoor program history. Brittany Floyd finished just outside of the top-10 with her throw of 34.58-meters.
Franck-Petersen placed ninth in the shot put with a distance of 12.64-meters
In the 1500-meter, Lauren Robinson led the way with a ninth-place finish, crossing the line at 4:42.53.
Britney Johnston closed out the first day by claiming her second consecutive 3000-meter steeplechase win with a time of 11:18.83. Freshman Gracie Sears completed the event in 12:10.66.
Shauntia Landrum had a top-five finish in the triple jump with a distance of 12.03-meters, which moves her into 10th all-time in UAB outdoor history.
After day one, the Blazers sit third in the overall team standings with 29 points. Samford (45) and Tulane (36) sit ahead of UAB.
"Today was a great day. Our athletes had a lot of successful events but just to host this meet was a blessing," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Our administration and event management staff helped out on a great day one and our athletes responded. It was a good day and we're ready for tomorrow."
