BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team clinched the 3-1 series win over LA Tech with a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field.
It's the first time since 2015 that the Blazers (21-17, 8-4 C-USA) have won a series over the Lady Techsters (14-22, 4-4 C-USA).
Jolie Readeaux had the play of the game for UAB, hitting a three-run home run to left field in the fifth inning, her first long ball as a Blazer and the third of her career.
Amy Woodham (4-8) earned her second victory of the weekend in the circle, throwing three strikeouts and only allowing one run in 5.2 innings pitched.
"It's a great team win," head coach Joe Guthrie said. "I am proud of our players. Anytime you can come from behind and win games and win on Sunday is excellent. We are starting to show some grit and fight. We need to continue to improve. Next week brings another challenge."
The game started off slow offensively, with neither team able to plate any runs until the fourth inning.
LA Tech struck first, hitting a homerun in the top of the inning and taking a 1-0 lead, the only run allowed by Woodham.
Readeaux changed the momentum in the Green and Golds' favor with her three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth, giving UAB a 3-1 lead, scoring Lilly Crowe and Sam Bean who opened the inning with back-to-back singles.
After the homerun, KK Crocker and Sierra Frazier were both able to draw walks.
Faith Hegh was able to plate them both with a two out RBI single to left field, giving the Blazers a 5-1 lead after five.
Woodham got two quick outs in the top of the sixth, but after a walk and single for LA Tech, Olivia Valbak entered the game to get the Blazers out of the jam.
Valbak was able to get a quick strikeout to end the inning.
After a scoreless sixth for UAB, Valbak returned to the mound to close out the game.
She struck out the first two batters she faced before LA Tech grounded out to her, giving UAB the 5-1 victory.
In 2.1 innings pitched this weekend, Valbak struck out six batters and allowed no hits.
Olszewski also had a great series for the Blazers, ending the four-game series with two homeruns, six hits, three runs and five RBIs.
Woodham ended the weekend with 13 strikeouts.
This is the second straight Conference USA series victory for UAB.
Up next for UAB is a trip to San Antonio, Texas for a four-game matchup with UTSA.
