UAB Women's Basketball Positional Preview: 1-4 Positions
11/3/2021 2:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM - The 2021-22 women's basketball season gets underway this week with an exhibition against Spring Hill on Friday night at 6 p.m. UABSports.com will provide the fans with a positional preview with insight from head coach Randy Norton. Today we will preview the 1-4 positions.
The Blazers have experience at the guard position, returning eight players from last year beginning with Margaret Whitley. She was named to the 2021 All-Conference USA Second Team last season after averaging a team-best 19.4 points per game. Whitley led the league in total 3-pointers with 72, averaging 3.1 per contest. Her goal is to get her 3-point shooting percentage to 40% this season.
Norton on Whitley: "We anticipate her shooting percentage will be higher this year. Last year she was in a situation with injuries she had to take more shots than usual."
Also returning is Emily Klaczek. As a freshman, she played in 15 games last season off the bench.
Norton on Klaczek: "Emily has been always improving. Her minutes went up at the end of last season and she'll be competing for more time this season."
Caitlynn Daniels and Claudia Armato are looking to be the primary ball handlers. Daniels is coming off a 2020-21 campaign where she was a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman Team and was a two-time Freshman of the Week. Armato made 12 starts and had an assist/turnover ratio of 1.62 in her first season with UAB after transferring from Southern Utah.
Norton on the point guards: "Both Caitlynn and Claudia have been doing a great job so far during practice. We will definitely need both of them to play well at point guard for us to be successful."
One of the captains is Audrey Jordan. She suffered a season-ending injury in the first game last season and played 13 games her freshman year.
Norton on Jordan: "Audrey is a great leader. And part of that is showing other how to step up into leadership roles."
Lindsey Dullard, whose season did not begin until January last season, started in nine of 13 games. In just her fifth game, she had a double-double of 14 points and 17 rebounds against conference champion Middle Tennessee.
Norton on Dullard: "Lindsey could have given a run as Conference USA Freshman of the Year if she played the entire season. She put up good numbers playing in limited games with limited minutes."
Lyndsey Robson, a graduate transfer from Green Bay, will be back next season while rehabbing an injury. She played in 108 games, making for 48 starts for the Phoenix.
Norton on Robson: "We're looking forward to have Lyndsey back with us next year. She brings experience and played in the NCAA Tournament as a freshman at Green Bay."
One of the newcomers to the team is Fairleigh Dickinson transfer Maria Roters. In her first year at FDU, she was named to the Northeast Conference All-Rookie Team. Norton considers her a classic stretch four.
Norton on Roters: "Maria has a high basketball IQ. She reminds me of [former Blazer] Angela Vendrell with her passing ability and by the way she sees the floor. She has a great first step and can get to the rim."
Kylee Schneringer, who is in her second season at UAB, has had an excellent off season after playing in 17 games last year.
Norton on Schneringer: "Kylee is much improved from last year. She had a great summer and is playing at high level. She will definitely be competing for starting position at the 3."
Maddie Walsh, who saw action in every game last year as a freshman looks to compete for a starting position at the 3.
Norton on Walsh: "Maddie is another player who is much improved from last year. She had a great ability to take the three."
The only true freshman on the team is Anna Denes. A native of Budapest, Hungary, Denes played two seasons at Trinity Christian School in Atlanta prior to signing with UAB. She'll be playing at the 4, but can also play at the 3.
Norton on Denes: "Anna's best basketball in front of her. She had an extremely high motor and goes hard every day."
"As a team, we are going to have great depth from what I've seen so far. It is going to be competitive for minutes," added Norton.
