BIRMINGHAM – UAB head men's basketball coach Andy Kennedy has announced that graduate transfer Quan Jackson (Tallahassee, Fla. / Godby / Georgia Southern) and Simeon Kirkland (Ocala, Fla. / The Rock HS / IMG Academy / Florida SouthWestern State) have signed National Letters of Intent.
Jackson, a 6-4 guard, is coming off a junior season where he received All-Sun Belt Second Team honors. He averaged 13.4 points per game and was eighth in the country and first in the SBC with 2.6 steals per game. Jackson scored in double figures in 22 games, scored 20-plus points seven times, and his 79 steals are the third most in a GS single-season.
Highlights of Jackson's 2019-20 season include being named the Sun Belt Player of the Week on Feb. 10 after averaging 23.5 points, 4.5 steals and 3.0 rebounds in the Eagles' road wins over Louisiana Monroe and Louisiana. In the victory over Rajun Cajuns, Jackson scored his 1,000 career point. He poured in a career-high 26 points in Georgia Southern's win at UT Arlington. Jackson pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds in the Eagles' win over Radford. He recorded five steals four different times during the year.
As a sophomore, Jackson was named All-Sun Belt Third Team after averaging 14.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals while shooting 44 percent from the field and making a team-high 47 3-pointers.
For his career, Jackson has scored 1,141 points, averaging 11.8 points per game. He has played in 97 games, making 73 starts – including every game in 2018-19 and 2019-20. He finished his GS career fourth all-time in steals with 196.
AK ON JACKSON:
"Quan joins our program as a seasoned All-Conference performer. His length, athleticism and versatility allow him to excel in a multitude of areas.
He comes to us having already scored over 1,000 career points, and defensively his ability to be disruptive will be invaluable. We are excited that Quan decided to join us in our quest for a conference championship next season."
Kirkland comes to Birmingham after playing two seasons at Florida SouthWestern State in Flor Meyers, Fla. This past season, he led the Buccaneers to a 29-2 record and a perfect 12-0 mark in the Suncoast Conference. FSW finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA.
In 2019-20, the 6-10 forward averaged 8.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting 52.8 percent from the field. He recorded a pair of double-doubles – 14 points and 10 rebounds against Combine Academy and 10 points and 10 rebounds versus Snow College. He had 13 games scoring in double-figures including a career-high 16 points against Wake Technical Community College. For his efforts, he was selected to the All-Suncoast Conference Second Team.
As a freshman, Kirkland led FSW to a 30-3 record, 12-0 in the Suncoast Conference and a berth in the NJCAA Elite Eight. The Buccaneers finished the season ranked No. 5 in the country. His season-high was a 12 point effort against Broward College. He shot 46.7 percent from the field and grabbed 103 total rebounds.
Prior to his time at Florida SouthWestern, Kirkland played the 2017-18 season at IMG Academy after graduating from The Rock High School.
AK ON KIRKLAND:
"Simeon will give us a presence in the paint. At 6'10 his ability to rebound, protect the basket and score inside are all areas we needed to address in this spring recruiting period. Simeon's greatest strength is his ability to run the floor, as well as his ability to guard multiple positions defensively.
He played in one of the premier junior college programs in the country under Head Coach Eric Murphy at Florida SouthWestern where they achieved tremendous success."
Jackson and Kirkland join Rongie Gordon, Tony Toney, Terrell Ard, Jr. and Michael Ertel as the newest members of UAB's 2020-21 roster.
