BIRMINGHAM- Hoping to improve on a second place Conference USA finish a year ago, the UAB women's basketball team has released its 2019-20 conference schedule.
League play tips off Thursday, Jan. 2 when Charlotte comes to Bartow Arena to take on the Blazers. The Green and Gold will stay at home on Saturday, Jan. 4 to face Old Dominion.
"This is my seventh year in Conference USA, and I believe this year is going to be the most competitive and the strongest the conference has been since I have been here," head coach Randy Norton said.
UAB will go up against WKU in their first away trip of league play on Thursday, Jan. 9. The Blazers will stay on the road to face Marshall on Jan. 11.
The next week the Green and Gold are back in Birmingham for consecutive games against FIU on Jan. 16 followed by Florida Atlantic on Jan. 18.
UAB will head back on the road for two games to take on Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Thursday, Jan. 23 and Louisiana Tech on Jan. 25.
A pair of Texas teams will visit Bartow arena starting with UTSA on Thursday, Jan. 30 and continuing with UTEP on Saturday, Feb. 1.
One of the most anticipated matchups on the schedule occurs on Thursday, Feb. 6 when the Blazers travel to Houston to face the reigning C-USA regular season and tournament champion, Rice. The Owls went undefeated in league play a season ago, defeating UAB 55-43 in a low scoring game on Jan. 26 at Bartow Arena.
The Blazers will remain in the Lone Star State for a contest against North Texas on Saturday, Feb. 8.
Leading up to C-USA bonus play the Blazers will have two crucial match ups against rival Middle Tennessee. UAB will host the Blue Raiders Saturday, Feb. 15 before traveling to Murfreesboro for the final matchup on Feb. 20.
"Middle Tennessee has become a great rivalry game that our girls look forward to playing," said Norton. "They have been one of the top programs in C-USA for a long time, and the proximity of our schools makes them big games for us."
Following the contests with Middle Tennessee the Blazers will head into C-USA bonus play. Bonus play will determine the remaining four matchups by level of competition and geographical location. These final conference games will be held on Feb. 22, Feb. 26, Feb. 29, March 7 or March 9 and will be predetermined by the league office.
The Conference USA Tournament will take place at the conclusion of league play from March 11-14 in Frisco, Texas at Ford Center at The Star.
