6/17/2019 1:31:00 PM | Football
BIRMINGHAM – For a third consecutive year, the UAB football team will play on the road in Week 2 as the Blazers meet the Akron Zips for the first time in program history on Sept. 7 in Ohio.
The game at Akron will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network and kicks at 12 p.m. EST/11 a.m. CST.
All-Time Series: First Meeting
Last Meeting: N/A
Current Streak: N/A
UAB vs. MAC: 1-2
UAB looks to get over the Week 2 hump as this game has plagued the Blazers since their return in 2017, going 0-2 with losses at Ball State in 2017 and at Coastal Carolina in 2018.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
Akron is coming off a 4-8 season and enters its first year under the direction of new head coach Tom Arth. The Zips open the season at Illinois and round out the non-conference with UAB, Troy and UMass.
Senior safety Alvin Davis Jr. is the Zips' top returner on defense. He was a First Team All-MAC performer as a junior after leading the conference with four interceptions which he returned for 149 total yards and two touchdowns. Davis Jr. also added 77 tackles, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
UAB also boasts a dynamic player in the secondary in redshirt junior Brontae Harris, who looks to take command of that unit with the departure of safeties Broderick Thomas and Mar'Sean Diggs.
Harris led UAB in 2018 with two interceptions and 11 pass breakups as a sophomore, and saw his targets decrease throughout the season once opposing defenses stopped throwing his way.
UAB vs. MAC:
The Blazers started 0-2 against the MAC, but registered their first win against a team from that league last year in emphatic fashion with a 37-13 victory over Northern Illinois in the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl. The win against NIU was UAB's first bowl victory in program history.
