DALLAS- Senior Julian Mehl and juniors Donovan Watson and Joseph Buete have been named to the 2019 Conference USA Men's Soccer All-Academic Team as announced by the conference office Monday morning.
Mehl is a senior goalkeeper from Cologne, Germany majoring in chemistry. As a 4.0 student Mehl is a three-time C-USA Academic Honor Roll member and a recipient of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal which honors student-athletes with GPAs of 3.75 or higher. On the field the senior appeared in 12 games in goal with 11 starts for the Blazers. He recorded one shutout against South Carolina on Oct. 12 and registered 44 saves on the season.
Watson is a junior defender from Toronto, Ontario majoring in biomedical engineering. The junior has a 4.0 GPA and is a two-time C-USA Academic Honor Roll member as well as a recipient of the Commissioner's Academic Medal. Watson was one of three Blazers selected by his teammates as a captain for the 2019 season, the only junior chosen to wear the arm band. He started every game in the Blazers back line and led the team in minutes played.
Buete is a junior midfielder from Wake Forest, N.C. majoring in computer science. He has twice been named to the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll and is also a recipient of the Commissioner's Academic Medal holding a 3.9 GPA. Buete appeared in all 17 games for the Blazers making 16 starts in the UAB midfield. He finished the season third on the team in points with 2 goals and 1 assist on the year.
"It says a lot about these three players that they are able to accomplish what they have on the field and to match it with their academics," said head coach Jeff Kinney. "Being committed to both athletics and academics can be extremely challenging at times and these three have made this program proud with the way they go about their business. It is a great accomplishment."
UAB is the only team with three players on the All-Academic Team for the 2019 season. It is also the first time the Blazers have had three players earn All-Academic Team honors in the same season.
