BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off its first two wins of the 2018 campaign, the UAB men's tennis team returns to action on Friday as it hosts in-state foe North Alabama at the UAB tennis courts at noon (CST). The contest, which was originally slated to be played on Feb. 4, was moved due to inclement weather.
UAB (2-3, 0-1) will face its third in-state opponent of the season on Friday as it previously faced Alabama on Jan. 15 and took on UAH in doubleheader on Feb. 2.
The Blazers emerged victorious in their two matches against the Charges, claiming 6-1 wins in both the morning and afternoon session. Tim Dollman, Kenton Parton and Nikolai Manchev each won both singles matches they competed in on the weekend, while Giovani Pasini, Tom el Safadi, Fernando Vargas and Anru Fourie each claimed their first singles victory of the year.
In doubles play, the Green and Gold improved to 8-5 on the year after winning five of the six matches played against the Chargers.
UAB will be squaring off with North Alabama for fifth-straight season when the two teams do battle on Friday with the Blazers outscoring the Lions, 24-4, in the previous four meetings. During last year's dual match, UAB toppled UNA 5-2 after sweeping the doubles point and earning victories on Courts 1, 2, 5, 6 in singles play.
Friday's match will be the third-ever competitive match played at the UAB Tennis Courts with the previous two coming in last week's action against UAH. Admission to the match is free to all fans and free pizza will be provided, while supplies last.
