BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off a career night shooting the ball that helped guide the UAB women's basketball team to a school-record 17 made 3-pointers against UTEP on Friday, sophomore Rachael Childress has been named Conference USA Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Childress has now won five weekly conference awards in her career after being tabbed C-USA Freshman of the Week four times last season. A member of the 2017-18 Preseason All-Conference USA Team, the sophomore is the first Blazer to garner a weekly conference award this year.
"Rachael has consistently performed at a very high level all season long," head coach Randy Norton said. "She has a tremendous work ethic and literally lives in the gym outside of practice working on her game. Her performance at UTEP is of no surprise to anyone that knows her. She is a winner and will do whatever it takes to help our team win. She is very deserving of this honor."
The Moulton, Alabama, native was virtually unstoppable from behind the arc on Friday night in El Paso as she was true on a career-high eight 3-pointers (8-for-13) to pace the team's school-record 17-made treys on the night. Five of her eight triples came in the fourth quarter of play against the Miners, including three in the span of 1:42.
Childress finished the game with 26 points, the third time this season she has eclipsed the 25-point mark, while it was the fifth time this year she has knocked down at least five 3-pointers in a game.
She followed up that performance with an 11-point outing in the hostile Thomas Assembly Center as part of another Blazer road victory against Louisiana Tech, marking the 18th game that Childress has scored in double figures.
On the weekend, the sophomore averaged 18.5 points per contest and brought down five rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked one shot.
Childress and the Blazers (19-3, 8-1) return to action on Saturday when the Green and Gold travels to Huntington, West Virginia, to square off with Marshall. Tipoff from the Cam Henderson Center is slated for Noon (CST).
