BIRMINGHAM – Senior linebacker Tre' Crawford has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for his standout effort in UAB's 26-23 overtime victory versus Southern Miss on Saturday night.
Crawford was absolutely dominant as a pass rusher, picking up three sacks which totaled a loss of 33 yards. The Houston native's final stat line included four tackles, 3.5 TFL, 3.0 sacks and two additional quarterback hurries in the victory.
He was specifically disruptive when it mattered the most as two of his sacks came in the fourth quarter with the Golden Eagles trying to mount a game-winning drive.
In all, UAB had seven sacks and 13 TFL in the overtime victory and clinched the Conference USA West Division title.
The Blazers lead the nation in total sacks (38) and sacks per game (3.80). UAB entered the Southern Miss game needing four sacks to establish a new school record for single season sacks, which was previously held by the 2000 and 2014 teams (34). The Blazers had three sacks through three quarters and erupted with four in the fourth to set the new record.
Along with leading the country in sacks, UAB is also the national leader in third down (.242) and fourth down defense (.214), third in total defense (260.7), fourth in scoring defense (13.2) and passing yards allowed (153.8) and fifth in tackles for loss per game (8.5).
The No. 25 UAB football team (9-1) travels to Texas A&M (6-4) this Saturday for its final non-conference game of the season. The game at Kyle Field kicks at 6 p.m. CST on ESPN2.
