BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The NCAA has awarded ESPN the rights to televise the NCAA Women's Beach Volleyball Championship, beginning with the 2018 tournament, in a five-year agreement that will run through the 2022 season.
The event, held annually in Gulf Shores, Ala. at Gulf Place, is hosted by the Blazers in addition to the City of Gulf Shores and the Orange Beach Sports Commission. The 2018 version takes center stage on the worldwide leader May 4-6.
"We are ecstatic with the amount of publicity and awareness that an ESPN broadcast will bring to our growing program," UAB head coach Kyra Iannone said. "Our student-athletes devote tremendous effort and time to their craft and deserve to be recognized on the national stage. We take great pride in the privilege to host the NCAA Championships and set our eyes yearly on Gulf Shores as the ultimate goal."
The Blazers have served as host since the tournament's inception in 2016, which has seen Southern California take home both titles. In conjunction with the broadcast rights agreement, UAB is also entrenched as the host through 2022.
The ESPN family of networks will provide live whip-around coverage of every match throughout the tournament, including ESPN 3's full coverage of each individual match across all five courts.
Eight teams will qualify for the double-elimination tournament as the event culminates with the semifinals and finals on Sunday, May 6.
"The NCAA Women's Beach Volleyball Championship adds to our offering of more than 20 NCAA Championships we provide fans each year," said Dan Margulis, ESPN senior director, college and high school sports programming. "Beach volleyball is an emerging sport with untapped potential and ESPN looks forward to helping increase its national profile."
