BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's golf team will play in Birmingham for the first time this season as the Blazers welcome 11 participants to the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate Sept. 25-26.
Presented by former UAB All-American and PGA tour professional Graeme McDowell, the second of five scheduled fall tournaments will take place at historic Shoal Creek Golf Course. McDowell, a two-time Conference USA Player of the Year and Fred Haskins award winner- given to the nation's top collegiate golfer- is making a return to his college roots after amassing 13 wins in professional events. Competing in the tournament against the Blazers are Chattanooga, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Memphis, North Florida, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, South Alabama, Troy and Wake Forest.
Wake Forest headlines the field as they rank 11th in the nation, while Ole Miss and North Florida are receiving votes in the Golf Week Preseason rankings.
"We are excited to host an event on our home course and look forward to competing against a formidable field," coach Mike Wilson said. "This is an opportunity for us to improve upon our first tournament and our players are excited to compete against a top notch field."
The Blazers opened the season with a tenth-place finish at the Badger Invitational in Madison. Several standout performances highlighted the tournament, including William Walker's one-under par tournament result (71-76-68). R.J. Keur (73-70-72) also carded a one-under, placing him and Walker as the top UAB finishers (T-21st).
Freshmen John Racciatti and Nick Robillard also had encouraging showings, with Racciatti leading the club on day two with a 69 (-2) while Robillard turned in a 72 (E) in his first collegiate match.
The tournament resumes following a one-year hiatus, as the Blazers took home the title in 2015. Other results of note include UAB's second place finish in 2007 and 2013.
