BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In anticipation of the return of UAB football, the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport's Hudson News store will begin carrying a wide selection of UAB gear.
UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram and other guests, including part of UAB's Spirit team and Blaze, will be commemorating the addition by hosting a kickoff event in the airport on Thursday, August 24 at 3 p.m.
"This is great news for Birmingham, UAB and the fans who are traveling in and out of the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport. UAB will be represented during a very exciting time for UAB Football and continue throughout the year, representing not only athletics but the university, as well. UAB will be accessible to thousands of travelers each year," said Ingram.
Ingram and UAB coaches saw a need for UAB branded merchandise at the airport during their recruiting travels. The airport has carried UAB merchandise in the past but hasn't had a varied selection until now.
"The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is proud to support UAB Athletics. We are thrilled that they have chosen to kick off the season's celebration with us and look forward to serving UAB fans everywhere as the travel to support the Blazers," said Toni Herrera-Bast, PR/Marketing Manager for the Birmingham Airport Authority.
Participants in the kickoff event will gather in the pre-security area at 2:45 p.m. Media and representatives from UAB will continue through security and onto Concourse A and B, completing the tour at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame store for a press conference where airport officials, Ingram, UAB Women's Basketball Coach Randy Norton, and UAB Athletics Foundation board member Craft O'Neal will speak to the exciting addition to the airport. Fans are welcome to join the group at the pre-security area and at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame area only.
"The addition of UAB Athletics apparel in the Birmingham Airport is a clear indicator of the growing support of its programs and UAB Athletics' importance to the growth and vibrancy of the university and our city," said O'Neal.
Media who want to follow the entire route must submit names to hjeffcoat@burtonadvertising.com before 10 a.m. Thursday morning. Be aware of items not allowed in the airport. A list of prohibited items can be located at www.tsa.gov.
