UAB Bowling Heads Into Match Play In Eighth

DAY TWO STANDINGS

JONESBORO, Ark. &ndash; The No. 23 UAB Bowling team knocked off No. 6 Vanderbilt in the final match of the day to sit in eighth place heading into the third, and final, day of the Mid-Winter Invitational.

&ldquo;Today was definitely a struggle,&rdquo; head coach Michelle Crews said. &ldquo;The lanes played very different than we had anticipated from yesterday. The girls finally got comfortable and had some close matches against Arkansas State and another close match against Jackson State before picking up wins against La Tech and ended the day with a win over No. 6 Vanderbilt. We held onto eighth place putting us in position to move as high as fifth tomorrow.&rdquo;

UAB did not come out firing and found itself down 0-3 early after the first three matches of the day, but a strong finish was all the Blazers needed. UAB defeated La Tech, 862-810, in its fourth match and then made the quick turnaround to take down No. 6 Vanderbilt, 938-918, in the final match of the day. Seven Blazers bowled today.

Taylor Russell, Sierra Lewis, and Madeleine McDuff each bowled five games apiece for the Blazers. Caitlin Cunningham contributed four games, Rachel Strogin bowled three games, Rachael Berg pitched in two games, and Annie Hurley contributed one game.

Russell, a consistent in the Blazer lineup, bowled a team-best 189.60 average and sits in 14th place overall. McDuff averaged a 184.40 to sit in 23rd and Lewis&rsquo; 165.00 average has her in 47th.

The tournament concludes with best-of-seven match play beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. UAB is set to take on Central Missouri.
