BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team opens spring practice Friday working out at Mary Bowers Field, which will play host to 17 games throughout the 2016 slate.
“We ended the fall season on a great note,” said head coach Marla Townsend. “We are excited to start spring practice before the upcoming semester begins. We want to create an atmosphere of excitement early on and challenge the team to be relentless. We will keep raising the bar every practice until our season opener at South Alabama next month.”
This year’s squad features 18 returners along with five newcomers. Reigning Conference USA Player of the Year, shortstop Caitlin Attfield returns for her senior campaign accompanied by fellow seniors Sara Beth Williamson, Kelly Britt and Ashley Johnson.
Williamson, a 2015 all-conference honoree, returns as a crucial piece of the UAB offense as fellow all-conference honoree junior JoJo Fallen joins her on the diamond this spring.
The UAB pitching staff is anchored by junior Cara Goodwin and Meg Smith, who returns for her sophomore season after earning a spot on the 2015 C-USA All-Freshman Team.
The 2016 regular season opens Feb. 11 at South Alabama. The Blazers’ home opener is set for Feb. 16 when UAB hosts Alabama.
