BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB's football team opened 2014 spring drills Wednesday evening at the campus practice fields as new head coach Bill Clark got his first on the field look at the Blazers.
Clark, who was introduced as UAB's new head coach on Jan. 22, and his coaching staff put their new team through a two-plus hour practice under cold and windy conditions. Overall, Clark liked what he saw from his squad.
"Other than this basically being a winter training rather than a spring training, I thought it was good for a first day," Clark said. "I thought the organization was good and there was a lot of excitement which is just what you'd expect. But we have tons of work to do. Obviously, we don't have any pads on yet, so we'll wait and see then, but it was a good first day."
Clark has said that one of the priorities in the early stages of spring practice will be getting the players accustomed to the pace and tempo of the sessions.
"That's what we've been training for," Clark said. "We've been training to play at this pace. I think we've probably done less true strength training, though we've tried to get stronger with more agility and speed work and conditioning. And that was what was good to see out here. Granted it wasn't a hot one, but I think they came out here and competed."
