BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--UAB senior center fielder Whitney Fletcher and senior pitcher Lauren Webster were named Conference USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
It marks the second weekly honor this season for Webster and the first for Fletcher. Fletcher was also named hitter of the week twice a season ago.
On the weekend, UAB swept Memphis with a pair of come-from-behind wins, followed by a run-rule victory on Sunday, and Fletcher led the team with a batting average of .700. The Decatur, Ala. native, recorded six runs on seven hits, a double, triple, two home runs, seven RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.600.
Fletcher hit a timely two-RBI triple to deep right field and scored on a Memphis error to extend the second game of UAB's doubleheader at Memphis, where the Blazers trailed, 4-0, for the first five innings. Fletcher hit a home run over center field in the top of the sixth inning to get the Blazers on the board, down 4-1 before her performance in the seventh inning tied the game and allowed UAB the time to score two more home runs in the eighth inning to seal the win.
Including UAB's three midweek games, Fletcher posted a team-best batting average of .550, slugged 1.100 and posted another four hits and two RBI in UAB's 11-1 run rule win over Alabama State.
Webster (7-2) threw a complete game and was credited with a save during UAB's weekend at Memphis. Webster threw the entire five-inning finale and recorded nine strikeouts, including three consecutive in the third inning of the 11-1 win. Webster also appeared in game one of the series, and retired the Tiger batters in order for the sixth and seventh innings to record her first save of the year. On the weekend, she recorded an ERA of 1.00.
Earlier in the week, Webster pitched the first four innings of UAB's 11-1 run rule win over Alabama State, and only allowed one hit.
The UAB softball team returns home this week to host Mississippi State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT. The Blazers will resume Conference USA action by hosting a three game series with Southern Miss on Friday and Saturday. First pitch on Friday night is set for 6 p.m. CT, while Saturday's doubleheader will have a 1 p.m. CT start.
