BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team went through a shortened workout in shells Thursday morning as the Blazers look ahead to this week's upcoming scrimmage.
Head coach Neil Callaway said while the practice was shorter than most, he was pleased with the enthusiasm and focus of his team.
"We had a short practice today," said Callaway. "Everything was condensed down. We want everyone to be fresh and ready to go tomorrow."
Callaway said the Blazers spent a lot of time Thursday on the kicking game and will take a good look at that area in the scrimmage.
"We worked quite a bit on our kicking game, especially with kickoffs and kickoff returns," Callaway said. "Overall, we had a good tempo and good pace out there. Everyone seemed to be dialed in.
"In last week's scrimmage, we spent a lot of time on punts and punt returns. Tomorrow, we're going to focus more on kickoffs and kickoff returns. It's important that we find the right guy to be our kick returner and punt returner. And we'll continue to evaluate our kickers as we need to make some decisions there."
Callaway said to this point, the team hasn't put in the game plan for the season opener against Florida.
"Offensively and defensively, we're still doing 'UAB vs. UAB' and haven't been working on 'UAB vs. Florida,' he said. "The biggest thing with tomorrow is we have to find out who is going line up against Florida."
The team will host its annual Football Fan Day on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the food court of the Riverchase Galleria Mall in Hoover.
UAB opens its 2011 season on Saturday, Sept. 10 when it travels to Gainesville, Fla. to play Florida (7:00 p.m. ET/Fox Sports Net).
