UAB Athletics Announces Three Hires To Administration Staff

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB Athletics Department has announced the hiring of three new staff members who will fill administration positions, according to an announcement by Blazer Director of Athletics Brian Mackin.
Coleman Barnes, who has served as Associate Athletics Director and Executive Director of The Bulldog Foundation at Fresno State since 2008, has been named Associate Athletics Director for Development at UAB.
Timothy Garner, who worked as an accountant at UAB for four years, will serve as the Blazers' Associate AD for Financial Affairs.
Brad Smith, formerly Director of Marketing at Texas A&M, joins the UAB athletics staff as Assistant AD for Marketing.
"We are extremely excited about having Coleman, Timothy and Brad as part of our staff," said Mackin. "They all bring enthusiasm and new ideas to our department, and are great additions to the Blazer family."
While at Fresno State, Barnes oversaw the Bulldog Foundation, the fundraising unit for Fresno State Athletics, to support the Campaign for Fresno State. Barnes also spent three years at the University of Mississippi as an Assistant Director with the UMAA Foundation. Among his experiences in Oxford, he was involved with fundraising effort that raised more than $13 million annually for Ole Miss Athletics.
Barnes also worked as a Development Associate at the University of Miami - Hurricane Club from June, 2004 - March, 2005. He was an intern in the ticket office at Harvard University from 2003-04.
Barnes is a 2002 graduate of the University of Kentucky where he was a three-year letterman on the Wildcats' football team. He earned a Master of Science degree at Kentucky in 2004.
Garner returns to UAB after serving as a Staff Accountant at MMI Outdoor, Inc. since 2010. He previously held the position of Accountant at UAB from 2006-10. Garner also was an Accountant/Business Manager at Duncan & Associates in Montgomery from 2001-06.
Garner is a 2000 graduate of Auburn where he earned a Bachelor's degree in business administration. He also holds a Master of Accountancy degree from Auburn (2002).
Prior to going to Texas A&M, Smith previously served as Assistant AD for Marketing at Middle Tennessee State from 2005. Before joining the Blue Raiders, Smith served as director of marketing and ticket sales with the Mississippi Sea Wolves Professional Hockey organization from 2003 till 2005. A 2003 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, Smith worked with ISP Sports in Hattiesburg.
