UAB Softball Opens Conference Play This Weekend Against Tulsa

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team opens Conference USA play this weekend as the Blazers host Tulsa for a three-game series starting Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. CT at UAB Softball Field.
In honor of Family Day at UAB Softball Field Saturday, hot dogs will be $1 at the concession stand.
Saturday's first game will mark the 17th meeting between the two teams with Tulsa leading the series, 10-6. The last meeting between the Blazers and the Golden Hurricane was on May 7, 2009 at the Conference USA tournament. UAB fell, 7-3, to the No. 1 seeded Tulsa.
In it's last game, UAB (14-5, 0-0 C-USA) scored eight runs in the sixth inning to run-rule Jacksonville State, 13-5, Tuesday night in its first victory at UAB Softball Field. Despite going down 5-0 in the top of the fourth, the Blazers battled back by scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning. UAB chipped in another run in the fifth to tie the game.
In the sixth the Blazer bats heated up while taking advantage of two Jacksonville State errors. UAB had eight runs off of five hits to run-rule the Gamecocks. The scoring in the sixth was highlighted by a three-run double by freshman pinch hitter Issa Brown to end the barrage.
Senior centerfielder Martina Landrum leads UAB at the plate this season with a .438 batting average, 28 hits including six doubles, and 12 RBI. The Blazers' leadoff hitter led C-USA in stolen bases in 2009 and has stolen 12 bases in 14 attempts this season.
Sophomore catcher Mandy Lowman belted her seventh home run of the year Tuesday, to tie the total number of home runs she hit last season and bring her career total to 14.
Tulsa (12-9, 0-0 C-USA) defeated No. 19 Oklahoma State, 6-2, Tuesday. Senior outfielder Lauren Lindsay went 2-for-2 against the Cowgirls with one home run and senior catcher Christian Timmons drove in three runs. Lindsay leads the Golden Hurricane with a .492 batting average for the season, 30 hits and 10 home runs.
Freshman infielder Samantha Cobb has also been an offensive force for Tulsa with 24 RBI. Cobb also has 12 runs, two doubles and six home runs.
Pitcher Jordan Kinard (4-2) only allowed two earned runs and one walk to pick up the win over Oklahoma State. This season Kinard has recorded a 3.15 ERA and thrown 59 strikeouts in 46.2 innings pitched.
