BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB men's soccer player Carl Woszczynski (Columbus, Ind.) has been tabbed the Conference USA men's soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. The recognition marks his first honor this season and is his second career weekly award.
"Carl is very deserving of this award and I am glad he was recognized by the league office," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "Carl has been a big part of our success this year with his play in the goal. He is on pace for several school records and on his way to a terrific season and career at UAB."
Woszczynski continued his outstanding play in the net over the weekend, leading UAB to the 2009 SMU Classic championship. Woszczynski recorded a shutout and made eight saves in two games en route to being selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
In the Classic's opening contest against league rival SMU, Woszczynski recorded six saves and allowed just one goal in earning a 1-1 tie against the host Mustangs. In the tournament finale against Houston Baptist, Woszczynski made two saves en route to his third shutout of the season to lead the Blazers to a 1-0 victory.
On the season, the redshirt sophomore has made 38 saves, while allowing only seven goals in UAB's nine contests. His 0.76 goals against average ranks second in the league, and is on pace for the best single-season GAA in school history.
Woszczynski will lead the Blazers this Sunday when they take on No. 20 Kentucky in a C-USA match. The contest is slated to kick off at 1:30 p.m. CT (2:30 p.m. ET) in Lexington, Ky. and can be followed live on Gametracker.
