BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team will begin preparing for the 2009 season when it opens preseason camp on Wednesday at West Campus Field.
UAB will be working towards its first test, an exhibition game at Texas A&M on Aug. 15. The Blazers will open their regular-season schedule at Alabama on Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. CT.
"We have been building towards this day since the end of last season," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "I know that everyone has been working hard all summer. We are excited to be here and we can't wait to get on the field and get started."
A relatively young team is set to lead the Blazers this fall with four seniors, four juniors, five sophomores and eight freshmen on the roster. Although young in age, UAB is quite experienced with 14 letterwinners, including nine starters returning from a season ago.
"We are a very young team with a lot of experienced players," said Harbin. "A bunch of our young players got a lot of playing time last year against some good teams.
"This year, we are still going to be predominantly freshmen and sophomores. But, our players have talent and experience that we will pit against some of the best teams in the nation this season."
After playing at both Texas A&M and Alabama, UAB will open its home slate on Aug. 23 when it hosts Southeastern Conference foe Ole Miss at 2 p.m. CT at West Campus Field.
