BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Sophomore women's tennis player Evelien Strijker has been tabbed the UAB Scholar-Athlete of the Week. One of the Blazers' top players for each of the past two seasons, Strijker has also been successful academically.
In 2008, Strijker completed a successful freshman season by being named to the All-Conference USA Third Team. She has backed up that success this season as the team's No. 1 singles player. She has posted an overall record of 14-9, including a 5-4 dual-match record, and has also teamed with Paula Alvarez this spring to form the Blazers' top doubles team.
Strijker has also posted high marks in the classroom in her two years at UAB. Last season, she was recognized on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. This past fall, she received Presidential Honors at UAB after posting a 4.0 GPA.
Strijker becomes the second women's tennis player to earn scholar-athlete honors this spring, joining teammate Jenny Cape.
The Blazers return to the court Sunday with a 1 p.m. CT match on campus against Murray State. UAB was scheduled to host UT Martin on Saturday at Brook Highland Racquet Club, but that match has been cancelled because of expected inclement weather in Birmingham.
