IRVING, Texas -- Nevena Stefanov, a senior member of the UAB volleyball team, has been named the Conference USA Setter of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
Stefanov posted 118 assists over the weekend as she helped UAB to a perfect 3-0 record at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Laramie, Wyo. The senior handed out 46 assists versus Cleveland State and 48 helpers against Wyoming on Friday before posting 24 more assists in Saturday's sweep of Kansas.
For the weekend, Stefanov averaged 9.83 assists per set and also finished third on the team with 23 digs. She has now posted 40-plus assists three times this season and 30-plus assists on six occasions.
"The last two weekends have been really good for Nevena," UAB head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "She was great last weekend at Jacksonville State, and she carried that over to this weekend in Wyoming. She's running our offense like a senior should."
Stefanov -- who won the setter of the week award three times in 2007 -- ranks third all-time at UAB with 4,667 career assists. She is closing in on second-place Abby Thatcher (1995-98), who handed out 4,872 career helpers. The program's career assists leader is Tammy Robertson (1989-92) with 6,650.
With the three victories over the weekend, UAB (6-2) ran its winning streak to six matches. The Blazers will look to continue their recent success Thursday at 7 p.m. with their home opener and conference opener against Memphis at Bartow Arena.
Following the Memphis match, UAB returns to the floor Friday and Saturday as a co-host of the UAB/Samford Invitational. The Blazers will battle Alabama A&M and Florida International on Friday before taking on Troy on Saturday. All three matches will be played at Bartow Arena.
