BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Less than three weeks away from its season opener at Michigan State, the UAB football team practiced for 20 periods under the sun Thursday afternoon. Dressed in full pads, the Blazers continued to go 11-on-11 on a day that head coach Neil Callaway said the defense came out on top.
"Defense was just a lot better (today)," Callaway told the media following practice. "It was probably the first time all camp that the defense had the upper hand. Will Dunbar made some really good plays, I saw B.J. Steed make some good plays and Brandon Carlisle made some good plays, so defensively we picked it up out here today."
To finish off the week the Blazers will hold two practices on Friday before scrimmaging on Saturday. Heading into the later half of preseason camp, Callaway said he and his staff are keeping an eye out for starters at each position.
"I think we've got competition at every spot," Callaway said. "We're going to look at all of them and see what we think."
On Friday, the team will continue to work toward their anticipated season opener at Michigan State on Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. CT, a game that will air live on ESPN2.
