BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team will play its home opener on Wednesday when it hosts Troy at 7 p.m. in Bartow Arena. The Blazers are 3-3 entering their first home match of the season after playing to a 2-1 record at the Elon Classic this past weekend. Sophomore outside hitter Ivana Bozic leads the team with 107 kills this season and has already been named to two all-tournament teams this season. Sophomore middle blocker Casey Dent is coming off an all-tournament performance as well after averaging 1.3 blocks per game at the Elon Classic.
Sophomore setter Nevena Stefanov is the team-leader in assists with 253 after recently eclipsing the 1,500 career assists milestone. Junior outside hitter Fernanda Domingos is second on the team in kills with 59, while sophomore outside hitter Aleksandra Vujovic is third with 54. Defensively, junior libero Brianna Galvin has posted a team-high 79 digs this season, placing her 10th in Conference USA.
UAB will be looking to earn its second straight win in a home opener on Wednesday night after beating Stetson, 3-0, in the first match on its home floor last season. Troy enters Wednesday's match with a record of 2-4 after losing to C-USA's Memphis, 3-0, last Saturday. The Trojans are led this season by Aubre Smith, who leads the team with 63 kills, while Meghan Gilroy is second with 42. Both players have 11 kills.
UAB holds a 17-5 record against Troy all-time. The 17 wins are the tied for the fourth most against any opponent in program history. Only Samford (24), South Alabama (24) and Western Kentucky (22) have been defeated by the Blazers more times.
Last season, the Blazers were 12-5 in Bartow Arena. They will look to mirror that performance beginning Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when they take on the Trojans.
