UAB Faces Vanderbilt in Friday Night Matchup

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - On Friday evening, the UAB women's soccer team will engage in a non-conference battle with the Vanderbilt Commodores in a 7 p.m. match at Vanderbilt Soccer Complex (2,400) in Nashville, Tenn. The Blazers are looking to pick up their second consecutive victory after gaining a win over in-state rival Alabama, 1-0, last weekend at the UAB Nike Invitational.
Vanderbilt enters Friday's game with a record of 2-1-3. The Commodores have recorded wins over Dartmouth and St. Mary's (CA), with their lone loss coming at the hands of William & Mary, 1-0. They have also played to three ties versus Colorado, Denver and California. The Commodores are listed as 13th in the Central Region in the latest rankings by Soccer Buzz.
The Blazers have played a challenging non-conference schedule thus far, entering Friday's game with a record of 1-4. UAB suffered a pair of 1-0 losses to Clemson and Cal State Northridge, as well as falling to Oregon State and national-powerhouse Duke. The Blazers secured their first victory of the season last weekend when they outlasted in-state rival Alabama, 1-0, in double overtime.
This will mark the 10th meeting between the Blazers and the Commodores, with Vanderbilt holding an 8-1 lead in the all-time series. UAB topped the Commodores, 2-1, in 2004 at West Campus Field in Birmingham.
The last matchup between the two schools resulted in a 1-0 victory by Vanderbilt in 2005 in Birmingham.
