Blazers Take Third At Jace Lacoste Invitational

STARKVILLE, Miss. ----- The UAB track and field team finished third out of eight teams on Saturday at the Jace Lacoste Invitational hosted by Mississippi State University.
The Blazers scored 125 team points, just four-and-a-half points off second-place Mississippi State, who had 129.5 points. Conference USA rival Memphis took first place at the meet with 186 points.
Freshman Tara Colvin helped UAB earn 34 points on the day. Colvin finished first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.73, scoring ten points for the Blazers. She earned another six points with her third-place finish in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 25.05.
Colvin was also a part of two relay teams on the day. The 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Shauntel Jennings, sophomore Genoah Collins, senior Elace Minnifield and Colvin earned another ten points when they took first with a time of 3:42.37. The time was .09 seconds off the school record the Blazer foursome set earlier this year. Additionally, the 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Erika Russ, sophomores Stephanie McCauley and Oriana Carter along with Colvin ran a 46.68 and finished second, earning eight points for UAB.
McCauley was another big contributor for the Blazers. In addition to her role on the 400-meter relay team, she picked up another 10 points. She earned eight points following a second place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.86 and her 25.41 in the 200-meter dash helped her finish in seventh place and pick up another two points.
Minnifield picked up another six points following her third-place finish in the 800-meter run, where she posted a time of 2:17.85.
Jennings and Russ each scored another five points for UAB in individual events. Jennings took fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.72, while Russ's 14.67 in the 100-meter hurdles also earned her a fourth-place finish.
Senior Adrienne Duke scored 11 points for the Blazers. She took first place in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 1:01.78, earning 10 points. Duke also picked up another point after finishing eighth in the 100-meter hurdles, posting a time of 15.08.
Sophomore Erin Harris earned another eleven points for UAB, as did freshman Whitney Mays. Harris took fourth in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet-9.25 inches, scoring five points. Her 14.70 in the 100-meter hurdles earned her a fifth place finish and another four points. Additionally, she added another two points following her seventh place finish in the shot put with a mark of 31-08. Mays finished second in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:31.96 and scored eight points. She also took sixth in the 1500-meter run, scoring three points and running a time of 4:50.07.
Senior Judy Shepherd took second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.65. Shepherd's second-place finish earned the Blazers another eight points. Sophomore Jennifer Thompson also earned eight points following a second-place finish in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:38.60.
Sophomore Ryanne Fortney had another seven points for UAB. Fortney took third in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:41.70, picking up six points. Her time of 4:53.77 in the 1500-meter run earned her an eighth place finish and another point for the Blazers.
Sophomore Elizabeth Ambrus took fourth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:38.99, adding another six points.
Sophomore Mary Kim Webb and freshman Rebecca Brown rounded out the scoring for UAB. Webb took seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.67, earning two points; while Brown scored another point following her eighth-place finish in the pole vault. Brown tied her school record of 10 feet.
UAB will head back to Mississippi on April 23, when the team will compete at the Ole Miss Open in Oxford.
