BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's tennis team will stay in Birmingham Friday, as the Blazers face Birmingham-Southern at 2:30 p.m., at the BSC Tennis Complex. UAB has never lost to the Panthers, as the teams have played each other four times in school history.
"We're looking forward to playing Birmingham-Southern," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "They have been a good in-town rival for many years. We've had the upperhand in the series so far, but Birmingham-Southern is good enough to reverse that trend if we don't play well. I'm making some changes to the lineup, as I'm adding two freshman in singles and doubles. How they perform will have an impact on this match for sure."
The Blazers fell to 2-2 on the season after a 6-1 loss at Auburn. UAB's Samrin Tanzeem tallied a win in the No. 4 singles match, but it was not enough, as the Tigers recorded victories in two doubles as well as five singles matches. Tanzeem has been the Blazers' most consistent singles player this spring, tallying a 3-1 overall mark, with her only loss coming in UAB's match with nationally-ranked Mississippi State.
Birmingham-Southern is 1-2 on the year. After defeating Montevallo, 7-0, to start the season, the Panthers have suffered consecutive losses to Furman and Jacksonville State. Cammie Nix leads the way for Birmingham-Southern, with a 2-1 record in both singles and doubles. Nix suffered her first losses of the season against Furman, losing at the No. 5 singles position and the No. 1 doubles slot with partner Rachel Malina.
