Women's Basketball Hosts Mississippi State Thursday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's basketball team welcomes Mississippi State to Bartow Arena Thursday at 7 p.m., as the Blazers go for their fifth-consecutive win. UAB is coming off a 66-61 victory over Western Kentucky, its second-straight come-from-behind win.
With the win, UAB improved to 5-4 on the season, having won its last five home contests. Junior guard Carmen Guzman leads the team with 16.0 points per game and was named Conference USA Player of the Week on Tuesday. Crystal McFadden is contributing an additional 15.9 points a contest. As a team, the Blazers are hitting 43.1 percent of their shots and average 66.1 points and 36.7 rebounds per game.
Mississippi State dropped to 4-7 overall with a 61-42 loss to Purdue at the Mississippi State Classic on Dec. 20. The loss snapped the Lady Bulldogs' two-game win streak, which included wins over New Orleans and Morehead State. Mississippi State is being led by Robin Porter's 11.0 points a game and Natasha Henderson's 5.6 rebounds per contest. Head coach Sharon Fanning is in her 11th season with the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Bulldogs lead the all-time series with UAB, 13-11. Mississippi State won the last contest between the two teams, a 72-50 victory on Jan. 6, 2003 in Starkville, Miss. The last time the Lady Bulldogs came to Birmingham, the Blazers handed them a 76-56 loss.
