Elizabeth Hilligoss leads UAB At Clemson Opener

CLEMSON, S.C. --- The UAB women's track and field team finished first and fourth in the women's distance medley Friday evening at the Clemson Opener held at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Facility. UAB opened the Indoor season with two first place finishes.
The Blazers claimed first in the distance medley after the "A" squad posted a time of 12:30.67. The team consisted of Whitney Mays, Alina Varpiotaite, Tara Colvin and Jakia Williams. The "B" squad finished in fourth with a time of 12:57.45, respectively.
Sophomore Elizabeth Hilligoss finished first in the 5000-meter run Friday with a time of 18:18. 37. Junior Jennifer Thompson placed third after running an 18:58.78, while junior Ryanne Fortney ran a time of 19:11.18 and finished in fourth place.
In the long jump, junior Deborah Hawkins led the way for the Blazers finishing sixth with a jump of 18-2.5 feet. Freshman Katryce Sykes and junior Erin Harris both completed in the event finishing 17th and 27th.
UAB sophomore Erika Russ tied for 10th place in the 60-meter hurdles with Princess Cox of Charleston Southern with a time of 9.17. Harris placed 19th with a time of 9.41, while Hawkins finished in 21st place.
UAB had two athletes place in the 60-meter dash. Junior Stephanie McCauley placed 10th with a time of 7.78 and junior Candice Raye finished in 45th place.
The Clemson Opener will continue Saturday with multiple events starting at 11:00 a.m. ET and concluding with the women's 4x400m relay at 4:40 p.m. ET. Results can be found on www.clemsontigers.com.
