Leandro de Oliveira Named First Team Preseason All-American

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 4 2004 Men's Soccer Contact: Aaron Jordan (205) 934-0722 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Junior midfielder Leandro de Oliveira was named as a First Team All-American by College Soccer News, which was announced on Wednesday. The Bryan, Texas native is one of just five non-seniors to make the 11-man squad. "This is a great honor for Leandro," said UAB head coach Mike Getman. "We certainly feel Leandro is one of the most dynamic players in college soccer and that he is certainly deserving of this honor. We feel this will only add to the excitement of the upcoming season." Last season, de Oliveira finished with a team-best eight assists, while his five goals and 18 points ranked second-best on the team. He was named first team all-conference, first team all-region and second team all-american after the season ended. Originally from Brazil, de Oliveira transferred from Connecticut prior to the 2003 campaign to join high school teammates and fellow Brazilians Jarbas Carlos and Rogerio Oliveira. The trio combined for nine goals, 12 assists and 30 points last season. De Oliveira will lead the No. 29 UAB men's soccer team into the regular-season opener on Sept. 4 against Gonzaga at the Portland Nike Classic.
