BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's basketball team will begin the 2004-05 season with an exhibition game versus the Thavine All-Stars in Bartow Arena on Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. The game will be the debut of new head coach Audra Smith, who was named to the position earlier this year.
The Blazers return two of their top five scorers from last season. During their freshman campaigns, Crystal McFadden and Carmen Guzman were both in the top five for UAB. McFadden was second on the team with 13.0 ppg and was the only newcomer to start all 28 games. Guzman, was fourth at 8.1 ppg and finished second on the team with 77 assists.
UAB played its first competition of the 2004-05 season on Saturday morning, as the Blazers took on Birmingham-Southern in a scrimmage on the BSC campus. The Blazers and Panthers played two 20-minutes halves, resetting the score at halftime. Following those periods, the two teams played 10 minutes of "situational play", in which each team tried to come back from 10 points down in a five-minute time frame.
