BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team practiced in full pads for about two hours on Thursday afternoon as it continued preparing for next Wednesday's Conference USA showdown with USF. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Legion Field in Birmingham and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
"I think the extra preparation time next week will help because we're really banged up on the defensive side of the ball right now," said head coach Watson Brown. "We had four guys that couldn't even go today, so I think it'll help us.
Brown also believes his team is ready to rebound from last weekend's loss at Tulane. "They're disappointed, we're all disappointed that we lost," Brown said. "But its no different than winning a big game the week before. You have to treat every game the same and come back and get ready for the next one. Good football teams can do that. Bad football teams magnify the good and the bad. I think our kids will come back strong and I'm anxious to see it."
The Blazers (5-2, 3-1 C-USA) had a four-game winning streak snapped and were handed their first conference loss of the 2004 season at Tulane last Saturday. The two teams combined for 1,174 yards of offense in a 59-55 shootout taken by the Green Wave. UAB's Darrell Hackney threw for two touchdowns and 448 yards which marked the second-highest total in the history of Conference USA football. Roddy White led all receivers with 253 yards on 10 receptions and had a 28-yard touchdown catch.
USF (2-4, 1-3) will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak Wednesday evening at Legion Field. Most recently, the Bulls dropped a 41-9 decision at Louisville on Oct. 23. The Blazers defeated USF, 22-19 last season in Tampa, Fla. in the first ever meeting between the two teams.
The game will also be carried live on the Blazer Sports Network (101.1 FM in Birmingham).
