CLEMSON, S.C. --- The UAB women's soccer team will attempt to extend its winning streak to three-consecutive matches on Sunday as the Blazers face off against the 19th-ranked Clemson Lady Tigers at 2:30 p.m. (CDT) here at venerable Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C.
"We've been privileged to have a chance to come to this tournament and play some top-caliber teams like Furman and Clemson," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "Furman is a perennial NCAA Tournament team and obviously Clemson is really good. They (Clemson) have a lot of talented players and we're just going to have to try and do everything right against them tomorrow."
UAB (2-1) heads into Sunday's contest in the midst of a two-match winning streak after posting victories over Alabama, 2-1, and Furman, 1-0. The Blazers defeated Alabama at West Campus Field in Birmingham on Aug. 31, before dropping the Furman Lady Paladins in the opening match of this weekend's Clemson Invitational.
In the second match of the two-day competition on Friday, Clemson (2-1) lost its first contest of the 2003 season against the seventh-ranked Texas Longhorns, 1-0. The homestanding Lady Tigers won their initial two matches of the season versus South Carolina and Wofford,
Clemson opened its 2003 campaign with a 1-0 win over South Carolina on Aug. 29, and then outscored Wofford, 6-2, on Monday. In the four-goal win over Wofford, sophomore Allison Graham registered two goals and an assist.
UAB and Clemson have never met in a regular season contest, but played each other in an exhibition game last season. In the 2002 preseason match, the Blazers defeated then 14th-ranked Clemson, 3-2, in Fayetteville, Ga. UAB's former forward Adrienne Suffridge scored a pair of goals in the upset victory.
The UAB women's soccer team will close out its opening road trip of the 2003 campaign on Sunday as the Blazers meet the nation's 19th-ranked Clemson Lady Tigers at 2:30 (CDT) here in Clemson, S.C.
