Women's Soccer Hosts Sixth-Annual UAB Nike Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team is set to host the sixth-annual UAB Nike Classic this weekend as the two-day competition kicks off with Georgia Southern (2-1) meeting Samford (2-1-1) at 5 p.m. on Friday at West Campus Field. The Blazers and the South Alabama Jaguars will meet at approximately 7 p.m., immediately following Friday's first game.
UAB (2-2) heads into Friday's intrastate matchup versus South Alabama with a 12-5-1 all-time record against in-state rivals. The Blazers own a winning record against Alabama, 3-2-1, Auburn, 4-3, Birminghmam-Southern, 2-0, and Jacksonville State, 3-0, but have never faced the Jaguars.
Friday's contest between UAB and South Alabama will be the first meeting between the two schools in women's soccer.
South Alabama (2-2) comes to Birmingham in the midst of a two-match winning streak after posting victories over Austin Peay, 1-0, and Troy State, 3-2, last weekend at the Gulf Coast Soccer Classic held in Orange Beach. The Jaguars opened the season with a pair of tough losses against Southeastern Conference foes Ole Miss, 6-0, and Mississippi State, 5-0.
The inaugural UAB Nike Classic took place in 1997 and featured South Carolina, Tulsa and the homestanding Blazers. Since 1997, UAB has registered a 5-5 overall record in its 10 all-time UAB Nike Classic matchups. Last season, the Blazers defeated Georgia, 3-2 (2OT), and Massachussets, 5-1, in the fifth-annual UAB Nike Classic.
On Sunday, the four-team event will conclude at West Campus Field as Samford and South Alabama will meet at noon followed by UAB and Georgia Southern at 2 p.m.
UAB and South Alabama will face off for the first time in women's soccer history on Friday at approximately 7 p.m. in the second game of the 2003 UAB Nike Classic held at West Campus Field. Georgia Southern and Samford will begin the two-day competition at 5 p.m.
The UAB Marketing Department has tabbed UAB's Friday festivities as "Camper Reunion Day" and will allow all 2003 members of Coach Harbin's Girls Soccer Camp to bring a friend and attend the match for free. For more info contact Josh Yeager at (205) 934-7413.
