BIRMINGHAM, Ala.---The UAB softball program looks for its 100th victory at the Magic City Tournament February 7-8 against Birmingham-Southern and Samford.
Head Coach Marla Townsend and the Blazers are one win away from reaching 100 wins in just their fourth year of existence. Townsend planned on picking up the landmark victory while on the road in St. George, Utah. Heading into the Red Desert Classic the Blazers needed two wins, unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate and UAB only played one game against Cal-State Northridge winning, 6-5.
UAB (10-6) is set to go head-to-head with Samford (6-4) in the first game of the tournament on Friday at 3:30 p.m., before facing Birmingham-Southern (8-10) at 7:30 p.m.
The Blazers have played the Bulldogs eight times previously with UAB winning seven of those games. Samford has four players batting .400 or above, including junior Sarah Godfrey, who leads the Bulldogs with a .462 batting average and has an on-base percentage of .481. In the past 10 games, Samford has compiled 89 hits and 66 runs.
The Blazers hold a 2-0 series lead against Birmingham-Southern. In their last meeting on February 9, 2002, the Blazers defeated the Panthers 2-0, winning the Magic City Tournament.
UAB will be back in action at George Ward Park on March 11 to take on the Southern Illinois Salukis at 3:00 p.m. in double-header action.
