BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team closed out its weekend practice with just one two-hour and 30-minute session here Sunday. The Blazers will resume two-a-day practices on Monday.
For a third consecutive day, the Blazers practiced in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts. The team will report Monday wearing full pads for the first time this season.
"We're at a point now where it's full pads time," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "Then we will be able to see a few more things out of a few of the players."
Brown was again pleased with his team's effort as it prepared for the full pads practices for the next three days.
"We are battered, bruised and pretty sore right now and that's without full pads. These next three days are going to be really hard on the players and we've been trying to prepare them."
The first practice on Monday is slated to begin at 8:45 a.m., with the afternoon practice beginning at 4:45 p.m. The team will further prepare for its first scrimmage of the season on Wednesday afternoon.
UAB will kickoff the 2002 season against the nationally-ranked Florida Gators in Gainesville, Fla. at 5 p.m. CST. The game is slated to air live on a pay-per-view basis and will be re-aired on a tape delay basis through the Sunshine Network.
