Women's Basketball Team Ready To Host Lady Blazer Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB women's basketball team (2-5) will host Troy State (3-4) on Friday, December 20 at 6 p.m., in the opening game of the Lady Blazer Invitational. The UAB game can be seen on Comcast Sports Southeast (Charter Cable Ch. 15). Eastern Kentucky (4-4) and Grambling State (3-3) will tip off at 8 p.m. The tournament continues on December 21, at 3 p.m. when the consolation game will be played, followed by the championship game at 5 p.m.
The Lady Blazers are coming off a 72-58 loss to Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., last Sunday. Michelle Smith was one of three UAB players in double-figures, with 18 points to go along with nine rebounds. Natasha Thomas added 17 points, while Chantell Thomas tallied 10.
Troy State had five players in double-figures as the Lady Trojans defeated Illinois-Chicago, 74-53, on Saturday. Chaquita Alexander had a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Constance Kelly scored 16 points, Kim McGriff and Thea Herring had 13 apiece and Latoya Gay added 10 points to the victory. Kerri Fiehrer grabbed 11 rebounds, all defensive boards.
Eastern Kentucky comes to Birmingham on a two-game losing streak after falling at Pittsburgh, 78-68, on Tuesday. Teresa McNair had a double-double for the Lady Colonels scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Miranda Eckerle added 15, while Katie Kelly had 13.
The Lady Tigers lost to Baylor, 99-40, on December 15, dropping them to 3-3 on the year. Senior Shrieka Evans leads Grambling State with 12.0 points per game, while junior Scherwanda Boston is the leading rebounder with 7.2 boards per game.
